2008 Summer Institute on Service-Learning
The 2008 Summer Institute on Service-Learning will focus on one of the National Dropout Prevention Center's 15 Effective Strategies - service-learning - that addresses many of the reasons kids are turning their backs on school. The theme of this Institute is "Service Learning: A Strategy for Keeping Youth in School." This 2 1/2-day Institute will enable educators to understand how service-learning promotes positive youth development and prevents dropouts while reinforcing principles of high quality effective service-learning. Fifth Annual Urban Service-Learning Institute
The Urban Service-Learning Institute, sponsored by the National Youth Leadership Council, brings together community, young people, and leading educators to discuss service-learning outreach and application techniques that help students in urban environments achieve academic excellence and become strong community leaders. Discovering Community Summer Institute – Middlebury, Vermont
The Discovering Community Summer Institute offers educators the opportunity to explore the power of field research as a means to facilitate student engagement with their home communities. Over the course of an intensive, week-long program participants will work with cultural researchers, documentary media specialists, artists, and fellow educators in a learning environment that models an ethnographic approach to community enquiry. Congress in the Classroom – Peoria, Illinois
Congress in the Classroom is a national, award-winning education program now in its 16th year. Developed and sponsored by The Dirksen Congressional Center, the workshop is dedicated to the exchange of ideas and information on teaching about Congress. Congress in the Classroom is designed for high school or middle school teachers who teach U.S. history, government, civics, political science, or social studies. Forty teachers will be selected to take part in the program. Applications are now being accepted for the 2008 program. Individuals will be notified of their acceptance status by April 30, 2008.

Brower Youth Awards
Earth Island Institute established the Brower Youth Awards to honor founder and legendary activist David R. Brower. The Brower Youth Awards recognizes six young people in North America annually for their outstanding activism and achievements in the fields of environmental and environmental justice advocacy. The winners of the award receive a $3,000 cash prize, a trip to California for the award ceremony and wilderness camping trip, and ongoing access to resources and opportunities to further their work at Earth Island Institute. Young activist leaders ages 13-22 living in North America are eligible to apply. For more information, visit Earth Island’s New Leaders Initiative.

Caring Awards
The Caring Institute is now accepting nominations for the Caring Award for individuals from 9 to 99 years old. Caring Award recipients are role models who exemplify an extraordinary commitment to public service and social responsibility. An assembly of nominees is selected to be represented on the official ballot. The nominees are then voted on and selected by the Board of Trustees and previous Caring Award recipients. Recipients are flown to Washington, DC, and honored at a special ceremony. Young adult recipients receive a scholarship for college tuition. For more information, visit The Caring Institute.

The Newspaper Association of America (NAA) Foundation encourages middle and high schools to partner with professional newspapers in their communities and seek funding to start, relaunch, or revitalize student newspapers, whether online or in print.
All public and private schools serving grades seven through 12 and working in partnership with daily or nondaily professional newspapers are eligible to receive Student/Newspaper Partnership Grants from the NAA Foundation. Funding priority is given to startup student newspapers. However, grant applications to relaunch or revitalize former or current programs also will be considered.
